Homemade Burger Seasoning
Ingredients:
This makes enough to use 2.5-3 tablespoons per pound of beef and to store the rest in an airtight container.
- 1/2 tablespoon cumin
- 2 tablespoons paprika
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons parsley flakes (homegrown, air dried, and freshly ground is amazing!)
- 1 tablespoon dried basil (homegrown, air dried, and freshly ground adds another dimension!)
- 1/8 cup salt like Redmond’s
- 1/2 tablespoon black pepper (freshly ground is best!)
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
Instructions:
Measure out each ingredient and add to a pint sized mason jar.
Put lid and ring or a one piece lid on the jar tightly and give it a good shake.
Use 2.5-3 tablespoons of burger seasoning for 1 pound of ground beef.
With your hands, mix in the seasoning to the ground beef well then make out your burger patties. Remember that depending on the beef to fat ratio of your ground beef, burgers will shrink and generally, pretty significantly.
Throw those burger babies on the grill and enjoy an intense flavor experience with your cheeseburgers on homemade burger buns with a freshly sliced garden tomato and some fridge pickles. BRB- headed to thaw out some ground beef for burgers TONIGHT!
Are burgers only for the boys?
I’ll be honest: until this year, I’ve never really considered the flavor of a grilled burger.
When the grill gets fired up, I’m not the one who does the firing. That’s the husband’s job, thank you very much.
So, naturally, I don’t think a whole lot about the burger meat itself. I let him take over. I have no clue what he has added to the ground beef for flavor.
But as I was grinding up some fresh, dried herbs for another pre-made seasoning, I was craving a grilled at home cheeseburger on a freshly made bun.
Naturally, I ran to the internet for a little inspo but most of the recipes called for ingredients I didn’t have on hand like dry mustard and I was being too lazy to mix up some brown sugar at that exact moment. So I got to mixing around and after what my husband called “a really good tasting burger, babe”, decided I had better try again and write it down this time!
Glad I did just that because this is now our staple homemade burger seasoning when I get that hankering for a juicy, pasture-raised burger.
Best wishes from my kitchen to yours only eating one of these! Especially when you add a farm-fresh fried egg on top with a scoop of sauerkraut. GOOOOOD GRACIOUS!
Can I buy a packet of burger seasoning instead?
Sure you can but you’re here now reading this and likely have most, if not all, of these seasonings in your pantry currently.
Five minutes of mixing these spices and herbs and you have yourself a homemade burger seasoning without and MSG, an overload of synthetic salt, caramel food coloring, and a host of other fillers and unnecessary ingredients.
We’ve gotta work towards our better health by choosing to use a little bit of our time to make things with our own hands. Sacrifice a small amount of our time for the sake of our health by eliminating many ingredients that aren’t great for the body.
What else can I do with these same spices and herbs?
Just about anything!
It seriously feels that way as I explore making dry rubs for smoking meats and other seasonings for our favorite meals like pot roast dinners, chili, and Italian dishes, to name just a few.
My husband and I were just commenting over dinner the other night that most seasonings are the same few spices and herbs just in different measurements.
So, go ahead: stock up your pantry with all the spices listed above and I may add a few extras like:
- oregano
- dill
- thyme
- turmeric
- cinnamon
- bay leaves
These can make you a host of seasonings like the dry ranch I have linked below used for homemade salad dressing or dip and even taco seasoning. Double the recipe and store for up to a year in the pantry in an airtight container like a mason jar or an upcycled sauce jar.
