Jump To Recipe: Hot Dog Chili in a hurry
Don’t even need to click the button, honey. I’m going to give it you RIGHT NOW. Keep reading!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 1/2 TBSP mustard
- 1 TBSP garlic powder or minced garlic
- 1 TBSP onion powder or 1 finely diced small onion
- 1 TBSP paprika
- 1 TBSP chili powder
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup water, give or take
- 1 pound ground beef
Go ahead. Check your fridge and spice cabinet. You’ve got these ones, don’t you? If not, then friend, these are like staple spices for simple seasonings at home! Grab them the next time you’re at the grocery store. These 4 spices make a host of recipes such as taco seasoning.
Instructions:
Start by browning your ground beef and then draining the grease if preferred. Next, add all the ingredients listed into the pan with the ground beef. Then mix it well.
Make sure to give your hot dog chili a taste test with a clean spoon. If it’s too ketchup-y, add some more chili powder. If it’s too thick, add more water. Salt and pepper is “to taste” so you can decide how much you prefer in your hot dog chili.
Now that you’ve got the chili like you want it, add your easy-to-make hot dog chili generously to your hot dog or hamburger and enjoy!
It really is that simple and tastes good but beware that it can get messy! Use a plate and you may even need a fork.
NOTE: this hot dog chili can be made in 15 minutes with thawed ground beef. If beef is frozen, allow about 15 more minutes to thaw in hot water in a bowl. Another option is to cook beef low and slow in a pan with about 1/2 cup of water and a lid. Once beef is cooked, then start this chili recipe.
Can I make hot dog chili without worcestershire sauce?
Listen, I run to Pinterest like any sane person in need of a recipe too. And I’ll be honest: I’m always in search of the short ingredient list first.
I very quickly found these “easiest hot dog chili” recipes weren’t it.
First, I noticed the ingredient list was a mile long. Also, each recipe I clicked on called for worcestershire sauce of which I no longer keep on hand (goodbye, caramel coloring). One recipe called for tomato sauce AND ketchup. I’m sure there is good reason for them both; however, I didn’t have tomato sauce on hand so I decided to create my own hot dog chili.
You CAN make a delicious hot dog chili without worcestershire sauce and tomato sauce. You can make it with ingredients you likely already have in your spice cabinet and refrigerator.
Is this hot dog chili any good?
If you’re my 11 year old son who is probably the pickiest eater I know, then yes.
When he approves something, it kind of feels like I won a gold medal.
He likes it so good, he took his hamburger, chopped it up then used this recipe to make his own chili for dinner instead of just eating a cheeseburger like the rest of us. He followed this recipe then ate it on a hamburger bun like it was a Sloppy Joe (Manwich if you’re not from the South).
Will this hot dog chili recipe win at ribbons at the State Fair? I feel that’s highly unlikely but it’s tasty and makes for a great chili dog in a hurry.

This recipe makes quite a lot of dough. Often times I will split it into a loaf of sandwich bread and six buns.
