As the Instagram reel joked “you are a child” once you’ve started baking simple 3 ingredient sourdough discard crackers. Apparently this means we are immature sourdough artisans. Anyone can make these. But I believe that’s the whole point! Don’t be daunted by sourdough and artisan loaves. My family is a huge fan of simple sourdough sandwich loaves and this super easy cracker recipe here.
At least for me anyway. I’m not a lover of baking. In fact, I’ve joked for many years that I’m a bad baker because I am not great at following directions. Being told what to do is not my favorite thing. Recipes are more of a “suggestion” for me. That’s not a good thing if you want to bake great things! So I’m trying to be better at following the recipe to the letter.
Sourdough isn’t scary and it doesn’t need to be wasteful either. If it’s time to feed your sourdough but you’re not exactly in the baking mood, give simple 3 ingredient sourdough discard crackers a try. Delicious and simple and only 3 easy to pronounce ingredients you can be proud to feed your family.
Give Up the Goldfish
I haven’t fed my family a fish-shaped cracker since I realized they too use bioengineered ingredients in their recipe. Or at least “partially”. *Insert eye roll*. Same goes for our family favorite, the butter flavored round crackers in the red box.
Listen, it’s hard to eat perfect today. It shouldn’t be this hard but it is. We should be able to trust our grocery store food but the reality is, we can’t. Crops are being sprayed with all kinds of KNOWN harsh chemicals and no one seems to care. Seeds are being modified and changed in their DNA in ways our bodies cannot decipher. Insert here: inflammation, cancer, heart disease, and many other ailments. Gut health in incredibly important to our overall health so what we put into our bodies via our mouth is important. It starts with education and then with action.
This should not be happening, but it is! Only you can decide what food stuffs your family eats. It takes small, deliberate steps in the right direction.
Back to the crackers, these simple 3 ingredient sourdough discard crackers taste like they have cheese in them but they don’t.
Just butter, salt, and sourdough discard.
Are Sourdough Discard Crackers Worth It?
A conversation with a friend about what kind of flour to buy for baking had us talking about though the flour I choose to purchase costs more, we are no longer buying packaged crackers, cookies, or bread. The cost of that 5 pound bag of flour ends up being way cheaper in money and better in health than that of the bioengineered flour I was feeding my family.
Again for the folks in the back, will we be perfect in every bit of food we put in our mouths? Only if you grow and store every bit of every thing you eat yourself. If you do that, hats off to you! And I’m super jealous. Most people will not be able to be this perfect with food and that’s okay. No judgment!
Our family still eats out at restaurants where I’m 99.99% positive the ingredients aren’t organic nor non-GMO. My kids still eat candy sometimes with food dye and bioengineered ingredients. We don’t forbid it but we don’t encourage it either. We also share with our kids the ingredient list and the bad things in it so they can learn to make healthy food choices.
Real food always wins.
Because we know better, we try to do better where we can. Baking at home once or twice a week is a step in the right direction. You’re at least going to remove a lot of fake food from your diet by baking your own bread and cookies.
So are these simple 3 ingredient sourdough discard crackers worth it? Only you can be the judge of that, friend. But there’s no harm in trying them with this super short ingredient list!
The Easy Recipe: Simple 3 Ingredients Sourdough Discard Crackers
Here’s the fun part: the measurements are instinct only! Go with your heart. This is a fun recipe you can get creative with! I will add some suggested amounts for each ingredient but feel free to play around with them.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of Sourdough Discard
Healthy Pinch of Salt (Redmond Real Salt)
3 TBSP Melted Butter
Extra Razzle Dazzle to mix and match:
Dried Herbs like oregano, basil, and parsely
Red pepper flakes
Black Pepper
Parmesan Cheese
Cheddar Cheese
Paprika
Dry Ranch Seasoning
NOTES:
The cook time takes some experimenting with depending on your ingredients and how much sourdough discard you used.
I do not measure with this recipe simply because it will all depend on how much starter I had to use in another recipe and what’s leftover to discard.
Check these crackers often during the cooking process. Smoothing as evenly as possible in the baking sheet helps them cook more evenly. I have found our family does not enjoy these crackers being too thick. They are thick and tough to chew. Or too thick and too hard.
Again, the thinner, the better for this one. With just butter and salt, these crackers taste a lot like cheese crackers even though there is none in it!
Simple 3 Ingredient Sourdough Discard Crackers
Equipment
- 1 wooden/silicone spoon
- 1 baking sheet
- 1 sheet of parchment paper
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sourdough discard or any amount available
- 1 pinch salt
- 3 tbsp melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat over to 325 degrees
- Melt butter.
- In its original jar after a new starter has been made in another jar, add melted butter to sourdough discard jar.
- Add a pinch of salt and/or any other ingredients you want to add.
- Mix very well. Butter will take a good amount of stirring to incorporate well.
- Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Pour sourdough mixture in baking sheet and smooth into a thin layer. If you have a lot of discard, you may want to use a second baking sheet. These crackers are best when thin.
- Cook in over for 20-25 mins. Possibly longer. Check crackers at 20 mins. At this time, you could take them out and score them for easier breaking apart later.
- Remove when you think the crackers are ready and let cool.
- Break a part and enjoy!
