Grilled cheese sandwiches are a favorite among kids (and adults, if we’re honest). Cheddar cheese smothered between two pieces of butter-slathered bread cooked in a pan on each side until crispy brown is a core childhood memory. Pair that sandwich with a bowl of soup and life is grand! This recipe here is similar but slightly different and sweet, too! Enjoy a sweet grilled cheese sandwich on Christmas morning with a steaming mug of hot coffee for a delectable breakfast option.

That’s this sandwich and you need to meld those flavors together in your best cast iron skillet ASAP! Trust me here.

Sweet Grilled Cheese WITHOUT the sourdough
Not a sourdough baker? Not a problem. Use whatever bread you’d like for this grilled cheese breakfast sandwich.
Ingredients:
2 slices of choice bread (sourdough, yeast bread, french bread, store bought, etc)
cream cheese, softened* (see below)
1 TBSP brown sugar
1 TSP cinnamon
1-2 TBSP butter
Instructions:
To start, in a small bowl mix together brown sugar and cinnamon well. Set aside.
Then smear on softened cream cheese to one slice of bread gently. You may toast your bread slightly to give it more structure before adding cream cheese so the bread does not tear. Or leaving the cream cheese out to get to room temperature is always another option to not have torn bread.
Next, sprinkle on top of cream cheese the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture and apply the second slice of bread to create a sandwich. Feel free to add cream cheese to BOTH pieces of bread. The more cream cheese, the better in my book.
Now add about 1 TBSP of butter to your skillet that is set to medium-low heat. Allow the butter to melt and cover the skillet’s surface.
Once the butter is melted, add your sandwich to the skillet and allow this side to cook for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown to your choosing.
Then flip the sandwich to cook the other side. You may choose to add another pat of butter for the second side of the sandwich. I highly recommend more butter. Cook for another 1-2 minutes or until golden brown then plate and cut your sandwich down the middle (or diagonal, if that’s more your preference!)
Serve your delectable sweet grilled cheese sandwich on a plate with a fork and knife.
Feel free to add any of these available toppings:
- dust with powdered sugar
- drizzle lightly with maple syrup or local raw honey
- top with crushed pecans or walnuts
- dress the top with a few raisins or craisins
Or simply eat this sandwich plain and enjoy the savory and sweet flavors with a steaming mug of coffee. This is my personal favorite way.

* Why is there no measurement of cream cheese in this recipe?
There is no measurement for the cream cheese because I do not believe cream cheese should ever be put in a “box”, so to speak.
Use the cream cheese are liberally as you desire. You won’t regret it.
Want a good sandwich bread recipe from scratch without the sourdough?
Look no further, friend!
I, too, sometimes just want good ol’ yeast bread for a sandwich and this recipe gives me that in less than 3 hours:

This same yeast bread recipe can also be turned into cinnamon rolls (a perfect lightly sweetened cream cheese frosting recipe inside the cinnamon rolls recipe!).
Half the dough for bread, the other half for cinnamon rolls is an excellent choice.
Why Christmas Morning?
This sweet grilled cheese is perfect any time of year, truly.
There’s just something special about a Christmas morning filled with lights, coffee, scents of cinnamon and spruce, and love as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as a family.
A perfect breakfast for all to enjoy is found in this sweet and savory grilled cheese breakfast sandwich!
