Yield: 3 2 ml bottles
quart mason jar
Lid and ring
Organic olive oil enough to fill up jar, or jojoba or sunflower oil
Calendula flower heads
Sunny windowsill south facing window
Fine mesh strainer
Large mixing bowl
2ml Amber bottles
Fill a quart mason jar with the fully dried calendula flower heads. Be sure they are thoroughly dried out. When in doubt, dry them for a week longer. The moisture in the flower can ruin the oil infusion.
Pour choice oil into the jar until all flower heads are completely covered up with oil. Use the lid and ring to secure the top. Set the jar in a sunny windowsill for 6 weeks. Longer is okay too.
After at least 6 weeks, use a fine mesh strainer or fine cheese cloth to strain oil into a large mixing bowl. One with a pour spout side is a great option if you are planning to bottle your oil.
Notes: Save a few flower heads to add to each bottle or jar. It’s aesthetically pleasing to the eye in a glass bottle and you have the added bonus of continued infusion making the oil a little bit stronger.
You can most definitely pair down this recipe to a pint jar or smaller to make very small batches just for your own use at home.
Keep the extra dried calendula flower heads stored in an air tight container like a mason jar until you are ready for your next infusion.
