Easy Drop Biscuits

No kneading, rolling, or cutting for these southern biscuits. Just drop into a hot cast iron skillet then bake for free from perfection worry delicious biscuits! Not pretty but absolutely yummy.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Servings: 6 biscuits
Course: Breakfast
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 pinch salt be generous with that pinch
  • 3 tbsp butter grated
  • 1 tbsp bacon grease or avocado oil

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet
  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 mixing spoon
  • 1 spatula

Method

  1. Start by grating butter into the self-rising flour (if you need to make SRF, do that first then grate butter into it). Using a pastry cutter or two forks, cut the butter into the flour.
  2. Heat cast iron skillet up with bacon grease or oil and the oven is preheating to 400 degrees F.
  3. Mix together the rest of the ingredients into the flour and butter.
  4. Using a large spoon, dollop a spoonfuls of biscuits into the hot skillet. Use your index finger to push the sticky dough off the spoon into the skillet.
  5. Allow the biscuits to cook in the skillet for about 2 or 3 minutes. Do not burn the biscuit bottoms! Use a spatula to lift up the biscuit to check. When the bottom of the drop biscuit is golden brown to your liking, turn off the eye and carefully put the skillet into the heated oven.
  6. Now, bake the biscuits for about 15 minutes or until golden brown on top like you prefer at 400 degrees F.
  7. Lastly, remove the skillet from the oven and immediately coat/cover/drench those hot biscuits in butter.

Notes

If you do not have self-rising flour, no fear! I have a 3 ingredient self-rising flour recipe on the blog: https://johnsonhomenc.com/self-rising-flour/a white plate of golden brown drop biscuits piled up
