First Day Back to Homeschool Activity

Starting the school year with prayer over your children, your curriculum, your school room/area, your home, and more is the way to start a new year.

On the first day of school as a public school teacher, it was a day of introduction and getting a “feel” for one another. Learning new personalities and getting to know my students by name and what makes the student who they are.

We’d do little activities to reduce stress levels on the first day of school. To shake the “first day jitters”. Activities like “All About Me” booklets, creative time with those fresh crayons or even some watercolor, helped to ease into the school day and school year.

As a homeschooling mom, I know my kids. I’m with them every day. It’s my goal to study my children each day. What a blessing!

I don’t need an “All About Me” booklet on my children every year (we have done them in the past for fun, though.)

What we need is a daily reminder to treat others the way we want to be treated (Matthew 7:12) and to live a life where folks can see the Fruit we present in our words and actions. To be more Christ-like every day.

How to Make Fruit of the Spirit Watercolor

The “fruit” of the tree in the Garden of Eden was once interpreted as an apple. This doesn’t mean the fruit from that tree was actually an apple, though.

Hence why you’ll find all kinds of fruit that grow on trees in this activity:

  • apple
  • pear
  • avocado
  • lime
  • lemon
  • pomegranate
  • orange

Now that you’ve printed the fruits, grab the remaining supplies needed for this activity.

Water Color Paints

Paint Brushes

Laminator with laminating sheets (any educator’s best friend)

Scissors

Card stock (or regular printer paper is fine too)

Sharpie marker (black)

Read Scripture and Explain Activity

Now is a good time to read Galatians to the children and explain why you want this reminder to hang or be displayed in your homeschool area or just around the home.

Tip: write the Fruit of the Spirit on a dry erase board for your children to be able to copy down and spell correctly each word.

Bonus Tip: together or individually, find the Scripture in your Bible and have your child copy the words from the book for correct spelling.

Let the painting begin

With your arts area set up and ready for all the creativity juices to flow, allow your children to water color paint their fruits AFTER you or they write one Fruit of the Spirit on each fruit with the Sharpie marker.

I prefer to leave the fruits on the printer paper until all painting is done THEN cut out the fruit.

After all fruits have been painted, allow the paintings at least 20 minutes to fully dry.

Set Up Tip: put down a covering like a towel or paper towels to protect the work space. Use a bowl for the water as it won’t spill as easy.

Laminating, Cutting, and Displaying Fruit of the Spirit

Now cut out the fruits and lay them on the inside of the laminating sheet or however your laminator accepts paper to be laminated.

After the fruits have been laminated, cut out the fruits and hang or display the Fruit of the Spirit wherever you’d like!

Enjoy your daily reminder that adults and children, all of God’s children, need the Fruit of the Spirit and to give it as well!

Praying blessing upon your new homeschool year, mama! Warm hugs, Katie
